The Sunrise Dam Gold Mine lies on the eastern shore of Lake Carey in the northern goldfields of Western Australia, some 770 km north east of Perth. Formerly just an open pit mine, the operation now comprises both a large open pit and an underground mine.

As part of the underground operations reclaimed tailings are used to prepare a paste backfill. In order to get the maximum strength possible out of the pastefill the mine elected to use a colloidal mixer to preslurry the cement prior to injection into the paste stream. The cement slurry is introduced into the paste pipeline just prior to the borehole distribution system. This has the added advantage of keeping cement out of the paste mixer and the paste piston pump.

A third party provided the programming for the entire pastefill plant with guidance from Team Mixing on the steps and procedures necessary for proper operation of the colloidal mixer.
