As part of the 8.6 km Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension project, OHL-FCC-DIBCO North Tunnels Canada Inc. was awarded the northern portion of the contract involving construction of twin 4.5 km tunnels using two owner procured 6.12m diameter Lovat (now Caterpillar) EPB machines.

Team Mixing Technologies Inc. was awarded the contract to provide a single bentonite plant to feed both TBM’s. The plant was constructed inside a 40’ HC shipping container which was fully insulated and heated to combat the cold Canadian winter.

The plant incorporates a Tornado 1200 colloidal mixer for efficient mixing of the bentonite with water. The hydrated bentonite is stored in a 20 m3 holding tank built inside the 40’ shipping container. A pair of Moyno progressive cavity pumps transfer the hydrated bentonite to the TBM.

A blower added to one of the silo rooftop bin vents provides dust collection of the colloidal mixer when filling with bentonite.

Daily batch logs from the plant are uploaded to Team’s secure server for retrieval by site personnel from any computer with internet access.
