The Brisbane Airport Link (APL) project is the largest single investment in transport infrastructure in Australian history. The Thiess/John Holland Group JV is undertaking the design and construction of this megaproject which encompasses 25 bridges, nearly 15 km of tunnelling and over 7 km of surface roadwork. When complete, it will produce the longest road tunnel in Australia at 6.7 km.

A pair of Herrenknecht EPB TBM’s (S-512 & S-514) are being used to drive the 2.4 km long twin bore sections of the 6.7km road tunnel. At 12.45 m diameter and 4,900 kW these are the largest TBM’s ever to be used in Australia and the largest machines in the world to incorporate annular two component grouting through their tailskins.

Team Mixing was selected as the grout plant provider based on their high shear colloidal mill mixers which yield maximum grout strength with minimal bleed. The two fully automated plants interface with locally supplied silos (for cement and bentonite). High pressure peristaltic pumps transfer both the grout and accelerator to holding tanks on the TBM.
